Pinterest widget hack for free WordPress blogs

I decided to join Pinterest so that I could integrate the images I pin into the sidebar of my blog. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered there’s no easy way to do it—pinboard plugins are available for self-hosted wordpress.org blogs, but not on free wordpress.com.

Sorry, not for you!

Could I create a workaround using one of the existing widgets in the Appearance tab? I needed an RSS feed to tap into the stream of images I was generating on Pinterest. Once I learned how to generate an RSS feed for my Pinterest user profile (http://pinterest.com/yourNameHere/feed.rss), I plugged it into the RSS widget. That produced an unattractive string of text entries. What I needed was an image RSS.

Use the Flickr widget!

Turns out, that’s exactly what the Flickr widget is, and it works if you put in a Pinterest RSS URL instead of a Flickr one. You can’t show your pins in a grid, but you can customize your own title, number of pins (aka photos) on display and their size. The More Photos link at bottom navigates to my Pinterest profile page, even though my title doesn’t. I’m filing this under good enough for now, and hoping you’ll agree.
